2010 Legacy Melamine
Cabinet Construction Specifications

SAN DIEGO CABINETS custom line of fine quality cabinetry are built in a way that is unique to only SAN DIEGO CABINETS, utilizing the best features of American face frame design with the utility and space saving features of the European frameless design. We call this our unique “Modified Euro” design

 Advantage
The advantage of using this design is that our customers get cabinets that have much greater storage capacity because we do not loose space with the conventional face frame. In addition, because there is no face frame to uselessly waste space, our drawers are at least 2” wider in the same size cabinet as a conventional face frame cabinet. You can store more in our cabinets than in conventional cabinets.

Cabinet Interiors
Interiors of all cabinets have a melamine finish, which features the look of natural maple wood grain.  This durable interior is highly resistant to water and most common household chemicals.  It's easy-care with a rich, attractive appearance.

Shelves
Standard shelves are 3/4" thick furniture core with a durable melamine featuring the look of natural maple wood grain, PVC edge banding on all exposed edges matches the standard interior of the cabinet.  All standard shelves are fully adjustable at 32mm (approximately 1") spacing for added customer convenience. Unless ordered otherwise, all base cabinet shelves are full depth. Not half depth like everyone else. (Cabinets ordered with finished wood interiors feature 3/4" wood veneered shelves.)

Exposed End Panels
Exposed end panels are 3/4" thick wood plywood to match the wood species used on the doors. In other words, if the doors are made of maple, then all exposed end panels are made of ¾” thick maple plywood. If the doors are made of alder or cherry, then the exposed ends of all cabinets are built using ¾” thick cherry plywood.

Tops and Bottoms
Tops and bottoms of wall cabinets and the bottoms of base cabinets are 3/4" thick melamine with natural maple-look wood grain melamine. Base bottoms and wall tops and bottoms are glued and screwed into the sides.

Backs
Backs on all standard base and wall cabinets are 3/4" thick melamine with natural maple-look wood grain finish. The back is held securely in place with glue and wood screws that go into the side and bottom panels to form a durable joint. This solid back not only provides extra strength to the cabinet, but also makes it easier for the installer as the entire back of the cabinet can be used for securing to the wall.  Backs on special corner units and angled units, such as the CWC units, SBC units, DW units, and CW units are constructed of 3/4" natural maple-look wood grain melamine.  This material and construction technique adds structural stability to these special units.

Toe Kicks
A 3/4" melamine sub-toe kick is attached between the side panels in all units with a toe kick space. Finish wood Toe kick skins are available in 8' lengths for application to the toe kick space after installation for a custom appearance.

Corner Blocks
Corner blocks are installed on all base cabinets to keep them square & sturdy and provide a method to attach countertops.

Wood Rails
Horizontal Wood Face Frame Rails are provided at the top of all base cabinets. These wood rails are constructed of 3/4" thick solid wood, 1 3/4" wide, using the glue and screw joinery technique.  The glue and screw method provides a more consistent joint and has been proven stronger in extensive testing. These horizontal rails not only provide additional structural support for the cabinet, but also facilitate the installation of scribe or crown molding on wall cabinets and counter tops on base cabinets. When installing countertops with a standard 1 1/2" front edge, no cabinet buildup will be necessary.

Drawer and Rollout Tray Construction
Drawer and rollout tray box sides, backs and fronts are 1/2" thick, 7 ply furniture grade Birch wood with a 1/4" maple melamine bottom with a natural maple finish to match the cabinet interior. The Wood drawer sides, front and back is first sanded and then completely finished in a natural finish with sealer coats and two top lacquer coat to provide a long lasting finish which gives you a very clean interior and eliminates the need for drawer liners.  The four-sided drawer with specially formulated synthetic glue and staples are used for superior stability and drawer box strength.

Drawer Slides
Advanced, lifetime-guaranteed, epoxy-coated drawer slides are manufactured of sturdy Class I cold rolled steel. Bottom mounting adds to strength, with the result being a drawer suspension system rated at 100 pounds capacity. Dual detent drawer stops keep the drawer secured even when completely opened.  Quiet gliding polymer rollers deliver a lifetime of smooth, trouble-free operation. The drawer system's self-closing feature adds an extra measure of convenience.  Parallel-closing design ensures proper alignment.
As an upgrade option, SAN DIEGO CABINETS also offers a heavy-duty full suspension Accuride type drawer slide that allows the entire drawer to open and be securely held past the cabinet. For maximum visibility of the contents in the drawer, this is the drawer guide to use.

Hinges
Unless otherwise specified, all doors are mounted using concealed, European style, self closing hinges. These hinges are individually adjustable, so the all doors can be accurately aligned for the perfect fit.

Lifetime Drawer Warranty
The finely crafted drawer provides completely worry-free dependability.  Each drawer is so reliable and durable; it comes with a full lifetime limited warranty to the original owner.

Exterior Finish Specifications
The combination of old world craftsmanship and the latest technology creates an exterior finish of exceptional quality, one that assures years of beauty, durability, and easy care.
Our finish is formulated from a combination of synthetic resins.  It is comparable to the high-bake finish generally applied to automobiles and household appliances.
The final protective topcoat consists of a specially formulated SuperLac lacquer coating, which is far superior to the more common type, finishes.  The SuperLac provides a beautiful finish that resists water, heat and many household substances.  Regular cleaning requires only wiping with a dampened cloth and then drying.

Interior Finish Specifications
You'll find hidden beauty and convenience behind every cabinet door.  The maximum resistant surface combines the beautiful look of natural maple wood grain with the durability and smoothness of melamine.  This system provides a smooth, tough, easy-care interior that resists moisture, heat, fading, and peeling.  Shelf paper becomes a thing of the past, and a damp cloth is all that's needed for most clean-ups.  The beauty of your cabinetry will last for years with a minimum of care.
